Questions:

  1. Will SFCC and University of North Dakota Aerospace programs accept and apply previous flight training? Certificates from private flight schools? Ratings? Military Flight Experience? Logged flight hours?

    Answer

SFCC/UND Aerospace does accept previous flight training. The amount and to what degree is based on a case-by-case basis. SFCC/UND Aerospace will perform a Pre-Flight Training Consultation for each student planning on attending SFCC/UND Aerospace.

    Example 1:

If a student comes to SFCC with more than 30 hours of recent flight training. They will be allowed to take the SFCC/UND Aerospace Private Pilot Test Course and must still take the ground school. This course consists of the ground school and a pre-selected number of flight lessons to make sure the student is at the level of proficiency that is expected from a SFCC/UND student. At the end of the test course SFCC/UND personnel will give them a private pilot check ride, followed by a FAA Check ride.

    Example 2:

If a student comes to SFCC with less than 30 hours of flight training, they will be required to take the full private flight course offered.

    Example 3:

Let's say a student comes to SFCC /UND with their private pilot certificate, the student may petition to test out of the Private Pilot Ground School and Private Pilot (flight) Test Course.

    1. Testing out of Private Ground School in order to receive credit for the class.

The student would be required (PRIOR TO THE LAST DAY TO ADD) to take the Final Exam for the Private Pilot Ground School. If the student receives at least a 70% on the test he/she would be given college credit (if approved by SFCC) and not be required to take the Ground School Portion of the Training.

    2. Testing out of the Private Pilot Test Course (Flight Training Portion)

The student would be required to take an Oral and Flight Exam from a UND Aerospace employee in a SFCC /UND Aircraft. If the student failed either the oral or the flight, they would be required to take the pre-selected lessons from the Private Pilot Test Course and take the Oral and Flight test again at the end of their training.

  2. Acceptance (transfer) of credits from previous bachelor degrees from other accredited colleges and universities? Will the University of North Dakota accept credits from colleges other than the SFCC campus to obtain a B.S. degree.

    Answer

Upon arriving at UND a student will have two years of training and an associates degree from SFCC . At UND, a student who came from the SFCC/UND Aerospace Flight Training Program will enter with a junior status if they have at least 60 credits. If an individual transfers with credits other than those obtained at SFCC whether they are given credit or not at SFCC. It will be determined by the admission office at UND if UND will accept those same credits. The admissions office will look at the students transcript and related documentation about the credits obtained at a different school and determine if and how much credit may be given. Many classes, however, will be upper level aviation classes and there are few classes that can compare to them to receive credit, for example: International and Long-Range Navigation.

  4. Are the 250 hours mentioned for the Associates degree at SFCC only or does it include the total flight hours for the BS degree in Commercial Aviation at UND?

    Answer

The minimum hours of flight training (aircraft and simulator) at SFCC are the following:

    35 hours Private Pilot Certificate

155 hours Commercial/Instrument Single and Multi engine Certificate

    25 hours Certified Flight Instructor

215 hours total at SFCC. I cannot stress enough that these hours are the minimum flight hours required for graduation from these training courses.

230 - 250 hours total would be more realistic.

  5. Can the BS degree-seeking student take all the non-flying courses at SFCC so as to minimize the amount of time in Grand Forks North Dakota? What is the minimum amount of courses that a student has to take at the UND Campus (Residency requirement and/ or maximum number of transferable credits)

    Answer

A student graduating from the UND must have a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from the 4 year University and 30 semester credit hours of those 60 hours must be from UND in Grand Forks ND, in order to receive a BS from UND. UND Aviation does offer summer aviation courses so a student could finish in a shorter amount of time.

For additional information on transferring to UND go to: http://www.und.edu/dept/registrar/articulation/transadmiss.htm

Aviation and related courses from other colleges and universities do not automatically transfer to UND. All transfer courses, in addition to the SFCC classes in the letter of articulation agreement, are reviewed by the Aviation Department for transferability. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate a review process of transfer courses.

Concerning Residency a student must fill out an application, have a valid ND driver's license, and have lived in ND for a period no less than 1 year.

  7. Will there be training on turbo prop and jet aircraft included in the BS program or is that an additional certification (rating)? Will it be available at SFCC?

    Answer

UND does offer additional training in the Air Transport Option for additional Multi Engine time in a BE58 Baron and also there is a intern program to fly right seat in a Raytheon Premiere Jet. In the spring of 2003, UND obtained a brand new CRJ (Canadian Regional Jet) Level 6 Simulator that is used in an optional course in the aviation program.

Whether jet training or turboprop training will be available at SFCC is yet to be seen. UND Aerospace is always interested in expanding in areas where there is a demand for quality education.

A military physician based on the following regulation may give the medical exam.

    Federal Aviation Regulation 67.411 states:

Medical certificates by flight surgeons of Armed Forces.

    1. The FAA has designated flight surgeons of the Armed Forces on specified military posts, stations, and facilities, as aviation medical examiners.

    2. An aviation medical examiner described in paragraph (a) of this section may give physical examinations for the FAA medical certificates to persons who are on active duty or who are, under department of Defense medical programs, eligible for FAA medical certification as civil airmen. In addition, such an examiner may issue or deny an appropriate FAA medical certificate in accordance with the regulations of this chapter and the policies of the FAA

    3. Any interested person may obtain a list of the military post, stations, and facilities at which a flight surgeon has been designated as an aviation medical examiner from the Surgeon General of the Armed force concerned or from the Manager, Aeromedical Education Division, AAM-400, Federal Aviation Administration, P.O. 12. How are the flight fees paid for? Where is the individual student account kept and how is the money withdrawn from the account for flight times?

    Answer

Student must maintain a positive $200.00 balance account that is maintained by SFCC /UND in order to fly. (First time deposit of $1,500 is required) When a student flies he fills out a flight log which says how long they flew the aircraft or had a briefing with their flight instructor. This time is then invoiced at the airport and we withdraw it from your flight account.

If a student discontinues flying the remainder of his money will be returned to him in the form of a check.

  13. Does a student have to transfer to UND or can they go to another Aviation School? Will the credits transfer?

    Answer

A student does not have to transfer to UND. REMEMBER a student when transferring to another flight school (Part 141) can only transfer UP to 50% of the Total Curriculum requirements for the course. If you come to UND we can transfer 100% because we are all under the same flight school certificate that you attended in Mesa! It will most likely cost you more to transfer to another school. As far as credit transfers, they are determined by the school you wish to attend. UND has an agreement with SFCC that no other flight school does. This agreement states that you will arrive in Grand Forks as a Junior if you have taken the courses from SFCC that are in the SFCC /UND Aviation Commercial Aviation program.

  14. What tuition rate will SFCC students pay when they go to UND (resident, non-resident)? Is this covered by W.U.E.?

    Answer

A student, who is a Washington resident, just arriving to UND from SFCC, will pay the contiguous and WUE States tuition rate for the first year (2 semesters), which is $5,138. You may want to consider becoming a ND resident for the second year. As a ND resident the tuition is reduced to $3,662 per academic year (2 semesters).

In order to obtain ND residency you must fill out an application, have a valid ND driver's license, and have lived in ND for a period no less than 1 year.
